Timmins

 

Timmins is the largest community in the James Bay Frontier region. It is home to several world class mining and forestry operations. The city is also the regional centre for health care, education and government services.

The local hotels, motels and restaurants have taken steps to make the tourist experience here relaxed and worry free. The city is served a by a modern airport. It is easily accessible by road as well, being located on highway 101, with connections to Provincial Highways 11 and 144. Access to passenger train travel is easily arranged as well. The city offers a full selection of hotels, motels, dining rooms, cinemas, nightclubs and sports bars. Timmins offers excellent attractions such as the Shania Twain Centre and the historic Gold Mine Tour. You can watch miners drilling, experience the gold ingot pouring process and you can even pan for your own gold!

The Timmins area also has an excellent nature trails network. The hiking and biking trails are all well-mapped and marked and rated as among the best in Ontario. There is also Gillies Lake Conservation Area, close to the downtown, where visitors can enjoy a picnic, feed the ducks or stroll around the lake.

An added attraction for nature lovers is a unique wildlife park in the heart of the city, bordered by the Mattagami River and nature trails. This is part of a modern new resort featuring deluxe accommodations, meeting rooms and first class dining facilities. Timmins also serves as a hub where tourists can travel to outlying centers for as many days as they please, where anglers, hunters and backcountry travelers can stay at fine resorts and lodges and eat in great dining rooms.

Golf is another favorite pastime in this region. The city has three courses. In the summer the city comes alive with a host of events and festivals. There are regularly scheduled industrial tours to learn more about the city's mining and forestry heritage.
