Matachewan

This community is a little bit off the beaten path, which is just what some travelers are looking for when they come north. This was once a vital mining and lumbering town located in heart of the Boreal Forest. But these days it's a quiet little supply centre for the numerous lodges and wilderness camps in the region. The community also services some remote mining and prospecting ventures.

The town advertises that your adventure begins where the highway ends. Matachewan is located at the western end of Highway 66, west of Kirkland Lake on the shores of Montreal River, just down from the old Hudson Bay Company trading post, once known as Fort Matachewan. The boating, fishing and hunting in this area is among the best in the north. This is northern bush country, ideal for all types of outdoor adventure. One local outfitter even offers horseback wilderness adventure. Challenge yourself and experience this part of James Bay Frontier by canoe, kayak and or even on foot.
