Cobalt

Officially named Ontario's Most Historic Town, Cobalt was founded shortly after the turn of the last century when railroad tie cutters discovered rich veins of silver. Within months, Cobalt was Canada's exciting new boom town. New mines sprung up, millionaires were made and the rest is history. There is also the legend of blacksmith Fred Larose. He is credited with the discovery after he threw his hammer at a pesky fox and uncovered rich deposits of silver.

The town is located on Highway 11-B. Like many northern communities, Cobalt offers a wide range of services and supplies for the traveler. Local restaurants are visitor friendly and there are some excellent museums depicting the local history. For the avid reader, there is the famous Highway Book Shop, located on Highway 11, which is well known for its vast collection of books, old and new.
